Convergence 2 - Iceland (2012)

I am forever fascinated with the texture of water in motion - ever more so, when it is located in proximity to some really wild rock formations that also look as though they are moving. The juncture of water and land depicted in this image, was not only aesthetically engaging, but also encapsulates the turbulent geologic forces that lie just below (and sometimes above) the surface in Iceland.

Arnastapi Beach - Iceland (2011)

Although one would be hard-pressed to find a mundane view anywhere in Iceland, one of the absolute highlights of our trip was visiting the Snaefellsnes Penninsula on the west coast. This was a particularly unusual section of secluded beach that we happened upon during one of our hikes. The timing was just right, as the fast-approaching incoming tide left only a few minutes to capture the scene below me. I had to work quickly, but carefully, as I was perched on a precarious rock ledge to get the best angle.

Convergence No. 1 - Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland (2012)

Confused waves. Longitudinal patterns. Rounded stones. Layered, contrasting forms. This image captures the interplay, or convergence, of repetitive pattern and form that I find particularly intriguing in nature. At the same time, this is also a simple shot of incoming waves intersecting with outgoing rocks on a typical day. The viewer is faced with a convergence of perspectives, and can choose however he/she prefers to experience the image.

Basalt Tides - Iceland (2011)

Similar to the Big Island of Hawaii, Iceland boasts stunning black sand beaches and dramatic crashing surf. Hence this photograph carries a similar title to another image that I took while exploring Hawaii in 2009. However, Iceland distinguishes itself for many reasons, not the least of which are its imposing walls of other-worldly basaltic columns that rise almost vertically from the water’s edge. This photo was taken while standing atop one such coastal cliff, peering down at the incoming tide. The wind, true to the North Atlantic, was absolutely ferocious. It took numerous attempts before I was able to capture just the right shot – a moment in time when a break in the wind coincided with just the right wave action.

This smooth nugget of ice is both many thousands of years old, and at the same time a brand-new creation. Drifting aimlessly along a slow but steady current toward the not-so-distant waves of the North Atlantic, this iceberg was destined to be cast back onto the nearby glacially-eroded black sand shoreline. I was struck by its nearly imperceptible, yet distinctly deliberate movement toward the open ocean. This was a casual journey if ever there was one!

Dalvik Shore - Iceland (2011)

Iceland year round is a photographer's delight ... but especially so during the brief summer months when the sun never sets. We were camped at the public campground right in town, which was bursting at the seams with Icelandic travellers due to the upcoming fish festival – the major annual event for a town of only 1,400 people. The town of Dalvik is located along the spectacular Eyjafjörður fjord in northern Iceland. Although my wife was already fast asleep in our tent, I had to wait until nearly midnight to get this twilight shot, but feel it was worth every minute.

Blue and Grey - Jokulsarlon, Iceland (2013)

The Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon in southern Iceland is world-renowned for its bizarrely beautiful iceberg-choked waters, which create a dreamlike landscape experience for all who visit.

Windswept Valley – Northern Iceland (2011)

Contrary to the country's name, Iceland's valleys in summertime are some of the most lush green landscapes that I have ever run across! This one was home to innumerable horse farms. After a relaxing horseback ride through these fields, I circled back on foot (camera and tripod in hand) to capture the unusual texture and movement of clouds and grass.

Smooth Sailing - Iceland (2012)

The south-central coast of Iceland is renowned for enabling people to experience first-hand the otherwordly views of icebergs calving off glaciers, being carried out to sea, and then swept back toward the shore by the incoming tide. Capturing this image clearly was quite a challenge in the early morning light, as it involved a protracted exposure with a subject and background which were erratic and quite uncooperative. I’m very pleased with the outcome, but had to pay with several boot-fulls of icy water.

The Snaefellsnes Penninsula has an abundance of uniquely shaped volcanic rock formations, and terrain sculpted by a combination of glacial action and sea erosion. Rather than a typically sandy beach, the shore in this area was comprised almost entirely of rounded black pebbles. As each incoming wave receded back into the sea it rolled across the stones, creating a bizarre, and quite deafening roar. This made a dramatic backdrop for the textures of rock and mossy seaweed before the relentless tide swallowed them.
